Other athletes lift weights, cheerleaders lift athletes!

Cheerleaders from the Kingsway Dragon Sophomore Competition Team won every competition they entered this season.

The league is coached by Karin Lail, Kristina Lail, and Ashley Higginbotham. The league is the Kingsway Youth Football and Cheer and it is open to all youths in the Kingsway sending district. That means if your child is slated to attend Kingsway in the future, they are eligible to participate. The team spawns from East Greenwich, South Harrison, Woolwich, and Logan.

This team, the Kingsway Dragon Youth Cheerleaders ages 8, 9 and 10, won three first place cheerleading competitions in a row. This was a first in Kingsway Dragon Cheer history.

The first contest they won was the Deptford competition on Nov. 14. The second contest they won was at the Showtyme All Stars Competition at Timbercreek on Nov. 18.

Their crowning achievement was a first place victory at the National Cheer Tech Competition Fall Tournament at the Licouras Center at Temple University on Nov. 26. Second place at that final tournament went to Interboro and third place went to Marlton.

Sign-ups for the league are usually in the May timeframe and letters are sent home through the schools. Tables are also set up at local sporting events and/or events such as East Grenwich day

The competition cheer team is optional. Some girls opt to cheer just for football only, while others choose to participate in the competition team.

According to Coach Lail the biggest challenge is that our team’s age divisions are broken differently than most others. For example, our teams are kindergarten, 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th. All three competitions they attended were kindergarten/1st, 2nd/3rd, 4th/5th, 6th/7th, and 8th/9th.

Therefore, this particular squad of 3rd and 4th graders had to enter all three competitions in the 4th/5th grade division. Despite their young age, the future lady dragons still managed to pull off three victories.

“They are really an amazing group of girls,” said Lail. To demonstrate their hard work and determination, she sited that in the first competition they had three tumblers only.

A tumbler is a girl who can do back handsprings. By the third competition only three weeks later they had six tumblers.

“The girls really worked hard and when the coaches added the difficulty necessary to compete at the championship level the girls rose to the occasion,” said Lail. “They perfected their moves in less than a week.”

The coaches anticipate that they will be seeing even greater accomplishments from this team in the future because they have been so successful at such a young age and are so enthusiastic about becoming even better cheerleaders. All the coaches and all the parents are very proud of these cheering dragonettes!

Members of the 2007 Kingsway Dragon Sophomore Competition Team are Brittany Bates, Danielle Cannon, Sophia Casella, Jenna Cavallaro,  Julia Davidson, Ashleigh Donato, Kelley Ellis, Paige Fearon, Juliana Foote, MacKenzi Friel, Danielle Gannon, Gabrielle Goitiandia, Maria Goitiandia, Erin Gray, Regan Healey, Julia Klinger, Jessica Lail, Emily Maccarone, Rebecca Malmstrom, Alyssa Miller, Lexi Miller, Andriana Rice-Gilmore, Megan Selby, Corinne Snyder, Veronica Venit and Marissa Willox.
