Kingsway’s growth has spurred three new sports teams this school year
- girl’s volleyball, bowling and boy’s volleyball. Boy’s volleyball
has been added to the spring sports line-up. Bowling is in the winter
and girl’s volleyball is in the fall.
Head
coach Brent Dodulik is enjoying his first year as the Kingsway boy’s
volleyball coach. Dodulik is not coaching all alone. He has Eric Germo
assisting and coaching the JV team. Bob Tender is also helping out as
a volunteer.
Being the first season, everyone is new to the sport at Kingsway –
including the coaches. “This has been a learning experience for
everyone,” said Dodulik.
The team spent most of the early weeks of the season learning the
rules and fundamentals of the game.
When I interviewed Dodulik in mid-April, he and his Dragon’s had
already achieved a whopping 4-1 record. Not bad for a first year
start.
Dodulik credits all the great athletes on the team for their early
success. “The kids are such great athletes, they would win at anything
they set their minds to.”
Senior Mike Burgio is a setter. “Burgio is one of the strongest
leaders on the team,” said Dodulik. Senior Darren Luptowski is the
team’s strong side hitter and also leads the team in kill shots.
Senior Toby George is another setter. “George leads by example and
works hard in practice,” said Dodulik.
Senior Captain Dan Featherer is a jack-of-all-trades. He is the
team’s starting server and can do it all. “Featherer’s desire to win
is what sets him apart,” said Dodulik.
Senior Captain Joe Yeager is a hitter. “Yeager is one of the most
vocal guys on the team and picked up on the game as quick as anyone
this year,” said Dodulik.
Senior Tim Lex is very vocal and does what it takes to win.
Senior Joe Miles is the team’s unofficial defensive leader. Miles
doesn’t like to give up points and will sacrifice his body to stop the
other team from scoring.
Watch out for up-and-comer Sophomore Bill Shultz. “Shultz is big,
fast and has great court awareness,” said Dodulik. Shultz will surely
be an anchor for the team in the future. When I asked Dodulik what his
goal for the season was, he said, “Have fun and play some volleyball.”
Now it looks like this team may be headed for some post season
activity. And they haven’t even joined a conference yet.
Dodulik is proud of his kids on and off the court. He is looking
forward to years of coaching the Dragon’s volleyball team.
