Head
Coach Ian Enders is enjoying his fifth year with the Dragon’s varsity
baseball squad. He doesn’t coach alone this year and credits his fine
assistants with much of the team’s success. John Green mans the junior
varsity squad. Mike Wierski watches over the freshmen and Denis
Burlingame is a varsity assistant
“The
team has had its ups and downs this season,” said Enders. They started
the season with a 7-2 run. Since that run, the team has made .500 at
best.
Enders
suggests that mid-season distractions led them off course and chipped
away at consistent play. When I talked to Enders in mid-May, he was
sure the team was going to make the playoffs; Enders was just hoping
the team could regain that early season energy to make a playoff run.
Senior
Mike Savidge is shaping up to be the team’s MVP. Savidge is hitting
nearly .480 and anchors the defense in center field. Savidge is
attending Neumann College next year to play ball.
Senior
Sean Bowen is the team’s catcher. Bowen is a big part of the team and
is an unsung hero. “Sean keeps all the balls in front of him and does
a great job working with the pitchers,” said Enders.
Zach
Moore is a pitcher, plays first base and right field. Moore is hitting
over .400 and leads the team in homeruns.
Bobby
Leonhardt, Joe McIntyre and Steve Bennett round out the senior squad.
“All these guys are great leaders,” said Enders.
Junior
Kyle Kincade is the team’s number one pitcher. “Watch out for this kid
next season, he will rule the mound in our division,” said Enders.
If the
team can manage to put a couple wins together while ending their
season, Enders is confident they can make a serious run in the
playoffs. “The key will be minimizing the distractions and pulling
together as a team to play some consistent ball,” said Enders.
“It’s a
great group of kids who have been easy to coach, the pleasure is all
mine,” concluded Enders.
