COMMENDED STUDENTS IN THE
2012 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

WOOLWICH TWP. -- Congratulations to seniors Dominic Catalano, Laura Dera, David Hudson, Kimberly Mellon, and Kyle Sullivan, who have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.  These students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success.  They represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key roll the school plays in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  It is hoped that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success. The students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying PSAT Test

 

DOMINIC CATALANO, son of John and Terri Catalano of Mullica Hill.         

School Activities:  Student Council Webmaster/Parliamentarian, National Honor Society, Theatre, sounds manager for Musical, Mock Trial, Debate, JV Tennis, Kingsway Community Connection, CER, theater co-advisor.

Out of School Activities:  Summer Academy of Applied Science and Technology, Cornell University Summer College, National Society of High School Scholars.

Honors/Awards:  AP Scholar, VFW Voice of Democracy Regional Finalist, Debate: New Jersey Model Congress Committee Chair, Best Delegate, Overall Chair, Speaker of the House.  Princeton Model Congress:  Supreme Court Justice, honorable mention.

Future Plans:  Dominic would like to dual major or major/minor in mechanical engineering and computer science.  He would eventually like to become a college professor after a number of years in the industry.


LAURA DERA, daughter of Carol Dera of Mount Royal.

School Activities:  Editor-in-Chief of The Braggin’ Dragon, Biology Club, Anti-Bullying Initiative, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Musical, Play, Choir, Interact.

Out of School Activities:  Plays piano, volunteers.

Future Plans:  Laura plans to attend Cornell University and major in English with a pre-med focus.


DAVID HUDSON, son of Dorothy Cooper and Jeff Hudson of Mickleton.

School Activities:  Band, Video Game Club.

Out of School Activities: Mixed Martial Arts, Animal Shelter volunteer.

Future Plans:  David would like to attend Rowan University in the engineering program.


KIMBERLY MELLON, daughter of David and Maryann Mellon of Woolwich Township.

School Activities:  Newspaper Editor, Yearbook Editor, Foreign Language Club, Anti-Bullying Initiative, Interact, National Honor Society.

Out of School Activities:  Babysitting, volunteering, Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity, RISE Rowan Summer Engineering Program 2011.

Honors/Awards:  Honor Roll

Future Plans:  Kimberly would like to go to the University of Virginia and study chemical engineering.


KYLE SULLIVAN, son of Mark and Liz Sullivan of Bridgeport.

School Activities:  Cross Country, Spring/Winter Track, National Honor Society.

Out of School Activities:  Volunteer at Wheaton Arts Glassblowing Studio.

Honors/Awards:  Superintendent’s List, applied to Governor’s School.

Future Plans:  Kyle would like to attend MIT in the engineering program.

SENIORS OF THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBER


LEAH BACON,
daughter of Robert J., Jr. and Gretchen Bacon of Logan Township.

School Activities:  Three Musicals (How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, South Pacific, and Thoroughly Modern Millie) President of the Biology Club, Student Council, Senior Choir, Newspaper staff for layout, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Out of School Activities:  Horseback riding (6 years), Girl Scouts Gold Award recipient, participant in American Music Abroad: a choral tour of five European countries.

Honors/Awards:  Chemistry Council of New Jersey Scholarship recipient.

Future Plans:  Leah plans on going to college for chemistry, which will lead to work in a research laboratory.


THOMAS SHARP, son of Tom and Cindy Sharp of Swedesboro.

School Activities:  National Honor Society – Vice President, Student Council, Football, Track, Model Congress, Mock Trial.

Out of School Activities:  Bus Boy, volunteer work in community and church.

Honors/Awards:  Multiple Superintendent’s List recognitions, Princeton Model Congress Honorary Mention, recent member of American Legion Jersey Boys State.

Future Plans:  Thomas plans to study chemical engineering at college.


JANELLE WELLONS, daughter of Pompey and Kimberly Wellons of Logan Township.

School Activities:  Varsity Cross Country Captain, Winter Track, Spring Track, National Honor Society Secretary, National Art Honor Society, Cultures Club, Interact, Student Council Representative at Large, Model Congress/Debate, Newspaper.

Out of School Activities:  Bethel A.M.E. Church’s Young People’s Division (YPD) Vice President, NAACP Academic Cultural and Technological Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Vice President, self-employed as a mathematics tutor.

Honors/Awards:  Accepted into Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s MITES Program (received Director’s Awards and Spirit of Calculus Award), Outstanding Delegate Award at New Jersey Model Congress, AP Scholar Award, Gold Medal in Mathematics ACT-SO State Competition, United Youth Fitness Scholarship Honorable Mention, Live Poets Society Topical Winner.

Future Plans:  Janelle plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology to double major in mathematics and some type of engineering.
