Swedesboro/Woolwich
Little League Major Girls ROCK OUT!
The Swedesboro/Woolwich Little League Major Girls
have been cleaning up the softball field with their opponents. As of
July 23, the girls were already well on their way to carving out a
piece of history in the championship run.
The first team to fall victim to the
Swedesboro/Woolwich girls was Pequannock, a serious contender for the
title. The Swedesboro/Woolwich team handed them a 6-2 loss in the
first round of the Little League states. Pequannock is the girl’s
program that went to the World Series last season and lost in the
Championship game.
The girls conducted their first victory in front
of over 150 fans. The game against Pequannock was scoreless after two
innings. Then Swedesboro/Woolwich broke out and opened things up with
three runs in the third inning started by Rachel Ippolite.
The girls from Swedesboro/Woolwich added another
run in the fifth inning and two more and the sixth. Pequannock didn’t
get on the board until the bottom of the fourth with one run and added
their second run in the bottom of the sixth.
Pequannock was in shock when the
Swedesboro/Woolwich girls took the lead. It was like they didn’t know
what hit them and they were stunned for several innings.
One of the parents in the crowd overheard another
parent saying, “It looks like someone is finally going to beat the
‘Big Blue Machine’.” Another parent heard someone ask, “Where the heck
is Swedesboro/Woolwich?”
Well, let me tell you what, after the 6-2 win
against a former championship team, people know where
Swedesboro/Woolwich is now.
Head Coach Dave Dominik was certainly proud of
his team after this amazing win. Dominik is the first to admit it is a
team effort and he couldn’t do this without all the fine support from
his assistant coaches and volunteers, Tom Barb, Randy Dickson and John
Gattuso.
Their first victim fell easily. On July 21, the
Swedesboro/Woolwich team faced another fierce competitor, Washington
Township. Well, it turns out they weren’t as fierce as everyone
thought because Swedesboro/Woolwich handed them a crushing loss of
10-0.
“The score was kinda deceiving,” said Dominik.
“It was actually much closer than 10-0.”
Swedesboro/Woolwich took a 2-0 lead early in the
game. Then in the fifth inning they scored eight runs and mercied the
Washington Township team.
The Swedesboro/Woolwich team was scheduled to
play the winner of the Pequannock/Washington Township game on July 24
for the right to advance to the girl’s Little League Regionals in
Albany, NY. Since the team had already won two games, they are at a
huge advantage because they only had to win one of their next two
games to move on.
Watch out for these future softball killers as
they slug their way into the local record books.
