Kingsway Soccer
Head Coach John
Green is very proud of his Dragons this season. When I interviewed him
in late October, his team was already 11-2, an amazing start to what
will surely turn out to be an amazing season for the Dragon’s Soccer
squad.
Green, who is in his
second year, admits he wouldn’t be as successful without the
assistance of his fellow coaches. Mike Sandberg heads up the JV squad.
Brent Dodulik heads up the freshman squad. Steve Bergmann has been a
wonderful assistant.
The team is doing
better than most people expected them to do this season. At the
beginning of the season, the team was a little concerned about the
defense.
They knew scoring
wouldn’t be an obstacle. However, the “D” has totally exceeded
expectations this season and has risen to the occasion.
First on the list of
senior sensations on this team is Dan Featherer. Featherer attacks the
other team’s goal and leads the Dragons in scoring. “Dan is the one
person who always gets covered by the opponent’s best defender,” said
Green.
Senior Matt
Maccarone plays sweeper. “Maccarone is quick and could have been a
power forward for our team, but we moved him to defense where he has
really excelled,” said Green.
Senior Devin
Plemenos heads up the team in the goal.
When
I interviewed Green, Plemenos already had six shutouts. “Plemenos
makes quality saves and stopped a penalty this season to win a game
for us,” said Green.
Senior Tim Lex holds
the team’s marking back position on defense. Lex continually “marks”
the opponent’s best player and takes them out of the game.
Senior Jake Neary
plays striker for the Dragons. “Neary does a nice job finishing his
attacks and scores big goals at critical times for us,” said Green.
Rounding out the
group of distinguished and graduating seniors are Mike Henderson on
defense, Eric Ingram on defense, John Floyd at forward and Kyle Mcuaig
at forward.
Watch out for rising
star junior Matt Carrocino. Carrocino is a great all round player.
Junior midfielder
Ryan Juhring is one of the workhorses of the team. “Juhring is one of
our hardest working middies,” said Green.
Junior defenseman
Steve Bergman is another workhorse on the team. Bergman is full of
energy and the future of the defense rest on his shoulders.
Junior Dave Datz is
another up-and-coming star. “Datz is the team’s most improved player
this season,” said Green. Datz improved so much this season that he
earned himself a starting role.
Junior Les Regan
plays forward for the Dragons. Regan is real good at controlling and
possessing the ball.
The last rising star
for the Dragons is junior marking back Steve McAllister. Green said,
“McAllister has lots of energy and is extremely difficult to beat in
the back field.”
It’s no doubt that
this team is headed for serious post season action. The Dragons hope
to exceed last year’s results and make it past the first round of the
playoffs.
Green is extremely
proud of his club. “The players are great kids on and off the field.”
This, combined with the winning record, made his second year as head
coach the greatest pleasure of all.
